Description

Students will develop skills relating to patient management by participating in the care of patients in a variety of clinical situations. Work integrated clinical practice will be available within controlled clinical environments and under the supervision of placement staff. This unit involves external clinical placements for a 4 week period. At least 2 weeks must be spent in a suitable occupational setting, with the remainder made up of emergency department, primary care (GP) or other suitable placement as agreed with the course co-ordinator.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have completed 2 units (OHS6107 and PSP5505)

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively in oral and written format in a clinical setting and support various types of communication with evidence.
  2. Plan and construct reflections on learning experiences and plan for future learning.
  3. Explain the importance of and demonstrate ability to work as part of pre-hospital and/or interdisciplinary team in provision of care to patients from a variety of cultures.
  4. Plan and implement the use of limited and finite resources in the occupational setting.

  1. Therapeutic communication with patients, families and communities.
  2. Exposure to cultural diversity and the impact on health care outcomes.
  3. Ethical decision making in the context of equity and resource allocation.
  4. Safe intervention in acute and non-acute cases.
  5. Interaction with interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  6. Delivery of primary care at a community level.

Clinical Placements. This unit requires mandatory attendance at external clinical placements.
