Description

This unit will enable students to develop an understanding of the theory of primary health care including chronic disease management and health promotion. Students will further develop their skills in patient assessment, monitoring and education. An understanding of the clinical signs and symptoms associated with health conditions allows for treatment plan to be developed in the context of the occupational setting.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Recognise clinical presentations and complications of disease and plan treatment.
  2. Compose treatment plans for patients with adverse health events associated with chronic disease.
  3. Develop effective strategies for health promotion.
  4. Formulate and integrate organisational goals with patient safety and quality care.
  5. Identify the limitations in occupational paramedicine and construct plans for effective communication with interdisciplinary health care teams.

Unit Content

  1. Pathophysiology, clinical presentation and pharmacological interventions for patients with adverse health conditions which are commonly encountered in occupational health.
  2. Demographics and risk factors associated with the industrial workforce.
  3. Importance of established referral services as a result of limited access to resources in rural and remote setting.
