Description

This unit challenges students to establish and operate an occupational medical clinic in a case study format. Students are required to conduct a risk assessment; comply with legal and regulatory restrictions; develop reporting systems and ensure compliance and training is maintained. The final step is to treat emergency and primary health patients within the context of the established clinic.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Off-campus students are advised that this unit has a compulsory workshop held at the Joondalup campus and may be run outside of semester during university break periods.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Construct clinical risk management tools in the occupational setting to improve patient safety and reduce incidence of clinical error.
  2. Analyse clinical incidents and adverse events.
  3. Develop systems for complying with regulations and legislation relating to the collection, storage and dissemination of patient data.
  4. Display and justify clinical decision making and patient advocacy using evidence-based practice.
  5. Plan and implement appropriate patient management including pharmacological interventions recognising the need for referral to alternative health care providers.

  1. Techniques to identify hazards and conduct risk assessment. Utilise the hierarchy of controls to implement control measures.
  2. Medico-legal complexities in the workplace.
  3. Quality improvement metrics to ensure high standard of patient care.
  4. Storage and audit of scheduled medications.
  5. Advanced patient assessment, communication and interpretation of clinical findings.

Workshops, tutorials and clinical simulation supported by audio-visual and computer software.
