Description

This unit provides students with the knowledge to treat and transport severely injured patients in the pre-hospital setting. Emphasis will be placed on the pathophysiology of injury and shock, and the international evidence underpinning current treatment options.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 2 units from SCH1134, SCH1143

Equivalent Rule

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the evidence that supports best practice as applied to traumatic injury.
  2. Describe skills associated with managing a scene of injury and illness addressing lines of communication, cultural awareness and a team focus.
  3. Identify the causes of traumatic injury and the consequences of these injuries on body systems.
  4. Implement evidence based clinical and system based management strategies for the treatment of traumatic injury.

Unit Content

  1. Environmental injuries.
  2. Geriatric trauma.
  3. Head and spinal cord injuries.
  4. Hypovolaemic shock and trauma resuscitation.
  5. Kinematics.
  6. Paediatric and obstetric trauma.
  7. Thoracic and abdominal trauma.
  8. Trauma systems and injury prevention.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials and clinical simulation supported by audiovisual and computer software.
