Description

This unit provides students with the knowledge to treat and transport severely injured patients in the pre-hospital setting. Emphasis will be placed on the pathophysiology of injury and shock, and the international evidence underpinning current treatment options.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

All students are required to attend a compulsory workshop held at Joondalup campus.

Students must pass 1 unit from (SCH1134, SCH1143, SCH1106)

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify the causes of traumatic injury and the consequences of these injuries on body systems.
  2. Implement evidence based clinical and system based management strategies for the treatment of traumatic injury.
  3. Critically analyse the evidence that supports best practice as applied to traumatic injury.
  4. Describe skills associated with managing a scene of injury and illness addressing lines of communication, cultural awareness and a team focus.

  1. Head and spinal cord injuries.
  2. Environmental injuries.
  3. Kinematics.
  4. Paediatric and obstetric trauma.
  5. Trauma systems and injury prevention.
  6. Geriatric trauma.
  7. Hypovolaemic shock and trauma resuscitation.
  8. Thoracic and abdominal trauma.

This unit further supports student progress towards a role as a professional paramedic. It focuses on increasing proficiency in the student's systematic approach to trauma assessment and management. It will enhance their skills in clinical decision making in relation to traumatic emergencies. The clinical techniques, skills approaches and problems solving required for professional paramedic practice will continue to be developed in a controlled, interdisciplinary environments.
