Description

This unit contributes to the knowledge and skill framework of paramedics to work independently or in conjunction with other health professionals in the provision of healthcare in the pre-hospital environment. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and conducting diagnostic techniques which support physical assessment in a pre-hospital setting. The aim of this unit is to develop skills that enable students to implement pre-hospital emergency monitoring.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Off-campus students are advised that this unit has a compulsory workshop held at the Joondalup campus. The theory modules for this unit may however be studied online.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply, interpret and report on a range of medical and health tests.
  2. Conduct the implementation of health care strategies based on the outcome of a range of diagnostic and physical assessments.
  3. Conduct, interpret and report on a range of electronic diagnostic tests.
  4. Identify and describe abnormal lung function and sounds.

Unit Content

  1. Lung function, respiratory status assessment and adventitious sounds.
  2. Research supporting the management of shock and myocardial infarction.
  3. Medical and health care tests and the implementation of health care strategies.
  4. Myocardial injury and infarction.
  5. ECG monitoring and interpretation.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, e-learning and tutorials supported by audiovisual and computer software.
