Description

This unit provides students with the knowledge to treat and transport severely ill adult patients in the prehospital setting. Emphasis will be placed on the pathophysiology of common medical conditions in the prehospital setting, and the international evidence underpinning current treatment options.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed MHS1101 and MHS1102.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of human physiology to explain common medical conditions.
  2. Evaluate international evidence of contemporary patient treatments to inform clinical judgements.
  3. Use clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills to determine appropriate medical treatment of patients in the prehospital setting.
  4. Communicate clinical information accurately with healthcare practitioners.

  1. Cellular adaptations and innate defences.
  2. Acid base and fluid imbalances.
  3. Cardiovascular medical conditions.
  4. Respiratory medical conditions.
  5. Neurological medical conditions.
  6. Endocrine medical conditions.
  7. Immunological medical conditions.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students are assessed on their knowledge and ability to communicate appropriate interventions for a broad range of medical presentations. Case study analysis is used extensively to guide students with development of their professional decision making and clinical reasoning skills. Students learn how to use evidence-based guidelines to determine appropriate patient treatment and apply their knowledge and clinical judgement skills to ensure effective patient management in prehospital environments. They will apply creative thinking to guide the learning of their peers and learn how to adapt their language to suit different audiences.
