Description

Students will develop fundamental knowledge and clinical skills for safe and appropriate treatment of paediatric patients, including those who may require crisis intervention. Students will apply the key concepts of evidence-based paediatric care and use clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills to injured and ill paediatric patients. This unit builds upon existing knowledge of the systematic processes for attending medical and traumatic emergencies, with a focus on paediatric patient care and advanced paediatric life support.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Use clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills to appropriately manage paediatric patients in the prehospital environment.
  2. Communicate complex pathophysiology and treatment of a range of paediatric conditions with diverse professional and non-professional audiences.
  3. Formulate specific and appropriate patient care and treatment actions for paediatric patients with medical or traumatic conditions in the prehospital environment.
  4. Apply a defined systematic approach to paediatric advanced life support.

Unit Content

  1. Paediatric medical and trauma pathophysiology.
  2. Safe assessment, monitoring and protection of the paediatric patient.
  3. Care and treatment of the neonatal, infant, child and adolescent patient.
  4. Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary team management.
  5. Transfer of prehospital to hospital admission.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will apply clinical reasoning and use evidence-based guidelines to formulate specific and appropriate treatment for diverse paediatric patients in the prehospital environment and will be assessed on their knowledge of a broad range of paediatric presentations. Communication skills will be further developed, with a focus on the interpersonal skills and appropriate language to convey information to diverse, non-professional audiences.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
