Description

Using a problem-solving and research based approach, students will develop competencies in caring for obstetric and neonate patients in the pre-hospital environment.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Off-campus students are advised that this unit has a compulsory workshop which will be held at the Joondalup Campus. The theory modules for this unit may however be studied online.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the cultural and communication issues that confront health care providers in dealing with obstetric emergencies.
  2. Describe the management of the neonate.
  3. Describe the presentation and management of abnormal labour with particular reference to applying it to the pre-hospital environment.
  4. Describe the processes of abnormal pregnancy and pre-term delivery.
  5. Describe the processes of normal pregnancy and full term delivery.
  6. Explain and demonstrate the management of patients in labour in the pre-hospital environment.
  7. Explain the pathophysiology of gynaecologic and obstetric emergencies and the evidence based management to deal with these emergencies.

Unit Content

  1. Abnormal pregnancy.
  2. Emergency childbirth.
  3. Management of the neonate.
  4. Normal pregnancy.
  5. Obstetric and gynaecological emergencies and conditions.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials,readings and workshops. Teaching and learning will focus on the team approach to patient care and dealing with obstetric emergencies.
