Description

Using a problem-solving and research based approach, students will develop competencies in caring for obstetric and neonate patients in the pre-hospital environment.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

All students are required to attend a compulsory workshop held at Joondalup campus.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have completed PSP2103

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the pathophysiology of gynaecologic and obstetric emergencies and the evidence based management to deal with these emergencies.
  2. Summarise the cultural and communication issues that confront health care providers in dealing with obstetric emergencies.
  3. Outline the processes of normal pregnancy and full term delivery.
  4. Critique the pre-hospital environment.
  5. Demonstrate the management of the neonate.
  6. Summarise the processes of abnormal pregnancy and pre-term delivery.
  7. Explain and demonstrate the management of patients in labour in the pre-hospital environment.

  1. Abnormal pregnancy.
  2. Management of the neonate.
  3. Emergency childbirth.
  4. Normal pregnancy.
  5. Obstetric and gynaecological emergencies and conditions.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, tutorials,readings and workshops. Teaching and learning will focus on the team approach to patient care and dealing with obstetric emergencies.

GS1 GRADING SCHEMA 1 Used for standard coursework units

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
