Description

This unit builds on the knowledge of a health care provider in the management of disasters and major incidents from a pre-hospital perspective. The roles within these approaches to disaster and major incident response will be critically analysed and contextualised to practice. The focus will be on the practical aspects of the front line practitioner working in an interdisciplinary team dealing with multicasualty incidents.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Interpret emergency management legislation as it applies to the paramedic in global pre hospital environments.
  2. Manage the paramedic response at the scene of a major incident.
  3. Critically reflect on the paramedic's role in each phase of the emergency management cycle.

Unit Content

  1. Concepts of emergency management.
  2. Incident management.
  3. Medical and humanitarian relief.
  4. Agencies involved in the coordination of emergency management.

Learning Experience

ON-CAMPUS

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Students will analyse and discuss disaster and major incident response from a paramedic perspective, and develop leadership and communication skills.

Lectures are used to introduce the central concepts of the unit. On-campus students will receive these as weekly recordings. On-campus activities and seminars will provide students with the opportunity to discuss and analyse disaster and major incident responses from a paramedic perspective.
