Description

This unit examines paramedic leadership, professional practice, and management of patient-focused healthcare within the prehospital environment. Safety and risk processes are investigated, and content focuses on the AHPRA Code of Conduct, Paramedic Professional Capabilities and registration requirements. Students learn how to plan for and implement safe, high quality care strategies as part of an inter- professional healthcare team and mentor peers in the identification and planning of professional development activities. Students evaluate their existing knowledge, skills and capabilities against AHPRA paramedic professional capabilities and create a professional portfolio to support ongoing AHPRA registration.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed PST1107 Perspectives in Paramedic Professional Practice and SCH2204 Prehospital Policy, Ethics and Legal Issues.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of clinical leadership and management to develop high-quality patient care strategies.
  2. Implement safety and risk management processes to ensure the safety of self and others.
  3. Complete a professional development plan aligned to the AHPRA paramedic professional capability requirements.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students apply management and leadership principles through analysis of clinical scenarios and presentation of their own ideas. The clinical scenarios also provide opportunities for students to evaluate and apply safety and risk management knowledge. Students complete an e-portfolio of professional development evidence aligned with the AHPRA Code of Conduct and the Paramedic Professional Capabilities. They are required to undertake self-evaluation against the capabilities to plan professional development actions in collaboration with peers.

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
