Description

This unit examines paramedic leadership, professional practice, and management of patient-focused healthcare within the prehospital environment. Safety and risk processes are investigated, and content focuses on the AHPRA Code of Conduct, Paramedic Professional Capabilities and registration requirements. Students learn how to plan for and implement safe, high quality care strategies as part of an inter- professional healthcare team and mentor peers in the identification and planning of professional development activities.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed PST1107 Perspectives in Paramedic Professional Practice and SCH2204 Prehospital Policy, Ethics and Legal Issues.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of clinical leadership and management to develop high-quality patient care strategies.
  2. Implement safety and risk management processes to ensure the safety of self and others.
  3. Identify professional responsibilities and demonstrate judgement in relation to Ahpra registration and reporting requirements.

  2. Clinical safety and risk management processes including pertinent human factors.
  3. Professional Code of Conduct.
  4. Paramedic professional capabilities.
  5. Ahpra professional registration process.
  6. Professional development registration requirements and plans.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students apply management and leadership principles through analysis of clinical scenarios and presentation of their own ideas. The clinical scenarios also provide opportunities for students to evaluate and apply safety and risk management knowledge. Students undertake an evaluation of a clinical practice guideline as an example of safety and quality in the delivery of paramedic care to patients.

Academic Integrity

This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Breaches of academic integrity can include:

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
