Description

This unit will provide students with the advanced knowledge required to work independently or in conjunction with other health and medical practitioners in the provision of out of hospital care for life threatening gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical emergencies.Emphasis will be placed on obtaining a high level of understanding of the pathophysiology of gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical emergencies in order to make adequate and sound assessments of the situation. Students will learn current management strategies for the treatment of gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical conditions in critical situations and develop knowledge of interventions aimed to result in good patient outcomes in a diverse population.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critique and formulate methods of assessment and management for the pregnant patient.
  2. Describe and analyse the cause and consequences of traumatic injury in the pregnant patient.
  3. Describe the pathophysiology of gynaecological conditions and analyse the relationship between assessment and management of these cases.
  4. Develop evidence-based prehospital treatment plans for gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical conditions.
  5. Develop safe and effective prehospital treatment plans for gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical conditions.
  6. Explain the pathophysiology of an abnormal pregnancy and its management.
  7. Explain the pathophysiology of emergency obstetric conditions, including emergency child birth and care of the neonate and abnormal birth presentations.
  8. Review the progression of a normal pregnancy and associated prenatal care.
