Description

This unit will provide students with the advanced knowledge required to work independently or in conjunction with other health and medical practitioners in the provision of out of hospital care for life threatening gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical emergencies. Emphasis will be placed on obtaining a high level of understanding of the pathophysiology of gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical emergencies in order to make adequate and sound assessments of the situation. Students will learn current management strategies for the treatment of gynaecological, neonatal, and obstetrical conditions in critical situations and develop knowledge of interventions aimed to result in good patient outcomes in a diverse population.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Communicate with clarity and purpose, using appropriate medical language to demonstrate professional competence in the care and management of obstetric emergencies.
  2. Analyse complex gynaecological, neonatal and obstetrical cases in collaboration with colleagues to guide professional competence and decision-making in the care and management of obstetric emergencies.
  3. Formulate appropriate pre-hospital care and treatment plans for emergency obstetric conditions, including emergency child birth and care of the neonate and abnormal birth presentations.
  4. Apply the complex pathophysiology of gynaecological, neonatal and obstetrical conditions to correctly diagnose and treat these conditions in emergency situations.
  5. Operate with confidence in critical care settings demonstrating the ability to make accurate judgements under pressure.

  2. Reproductive anatomy and physiology review.
  3. Gynaecological conditions.
  4. Emergency obstetric conditions.
  5. Post natal care.
  6. Care of the neonate.
  7. Abnormal birth.
  8. Normal birth.
  9. Prenatal care.
  10. Abnormal pregnancy.
