Description

This unit prepares the student to work as an independent practitioner at an Advanced Paramedic level with emphasis on formulating a working diagnosis, effective communication, culturally respectful practice and creating evidence informed treatment plans. Students will build upon knowledge gained in Advanced Clinical Examination and Leadership for Paramedics and apply it to primary health and urgent care management of a range of medical conditions that affect cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous and genitourinary systems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Implement advanced clinical examination skills using a structured approach for common medical presentations in paramedic advanced practice.
  2. Formulate an accurate working diagnosis for common medical presentations in paramedic advanced practice contexts.
  3. Create effective, evidence-informed treatment plans to manage medical presentations of patients in advanced paramedic practice environments.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will demonstrate their advanced examination skills at an Advanced / Paramedic Practitioner level through exemplars. Problem based learning tasks will be used to develop clinical decision making at an Paramedic Practitioner level. Students ability to formulate accurate working diagnoses and create effective treatment plans will assessed by developing a diagnostic reasoning portfolio. Case scenarios will be used to expand students' diagnostic reasoning and knowledge of culturally respectful practice, pharmacology and safe medication administration within urgent and primary health care contexts. Online case study presentations from a range of health professionals are embedded throughout the learning modules providing students with opportunity to learn from a range of industry leaders.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
