Description

This unit will provide students with the advanced knowledge required to work independently or in conjunction with other health and medical practitioners in the provision of advanced out-of-hospital care for paediatric patients experiencing life-threatening illnesses. Emphasis will be placed on obtaining a high level of understanding of the pathophysiology of life threatening paediatric illnesses in order to make adequate and sound assessments of the situation. Students will learn current management strategies for the treatment of life threatening paediatric conditions and develop knowledge of interventions aimed to result in good patient outcomes in a diverse population.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply critical thinking to the implementation of advanced medical interventions in traumatic events in paediatric patients.
  2. Compare and contrast different management procedures relevant to the pathophysiology of poor states of perfusion in paediatric patients.
  3. Critically appraise the pathophysiology of life threatening paediatric illnesses and disease.
  4. Develop evidence based pre-hospital treatment plans for life threatening paediatric patients.
  5. Develop safe and effective pre-hospital treatment plans for life threatening paediatric illnesses.

Unit Content

  1. Develop and present case management rationale using case study presentation.
  2. Evidence based management of paediatric emergencies.
  3. Interpretation of clinical presentation of life threatening paediatric illness.
  4. Pathophysiology and causes of paediatric disease and life threatening illness.
  5. Pre-hospital paediatric pharmacology, and treatments.
  6. Safe and effective management of life threatening paediatric emergencies.
