Description

This unit will provide students with the advanced knowledge required to work independently or in conjunction with other health and medical practitioners in the provision of advanced out-of-hospital care for paediatric patients experiencing life-threatening illnesses. Emphasis will be placed on obtaining a high level of understanding of the pathophysiology of life threatening paediatric illnesses in order to make adequate and sound assessments of the situation. Students will learn current management strategies for the treatment of life threatening paediatric conditions and develop knowledge of interventions aimed to result in good patient outcomes in a diverse population.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the complex pathophysiology of life threatening paediatric conditions to guide clinical judgement and decision-making when treating paediatric patients in medical emergencies.
  2. Examine and correctly assess the clinical presentation of paediatric patients in emergency situations to formulate advanced medical interventions and pre-hospital treatment plans.
  3. Communicate with clarity and purpose, using appropriate medical language to demonstrate professional competence in the care and management of paediatric emergencies.
  4. Analyse diagnostic medical test results in collaboration with colleagues to formulate appropriate pre-hospital care and treatment plans.

  1. Develop and present case management rationale using case study presentation.
  2. Evidence based management of paediatric emergencies.
  3. Interpretation of clinical presentation of life threatening paediatric illness.
  4. Pathophysiology and causes of paediatric disease and life threatening illness.
  5. Pre-hospital paediatric pharmacology, and treatments.
  6. Safe and effective management of life threatening paediatric emergencies.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
