Description

This unit builds on previous knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods typically used in generating psychological knowledge. In discussing methodologies the ethical conduct of research is emphasised, particularly in relation to the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics and Ethical Guidelines. Understanding is consolidated through critical evaluation of published studies and the development of psychology research proposals.

Must have passed 2 units from PSY1101, PSY2102

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the major issues in conducting research in natural settings.
  2. Propose the investigation of a research question using qualitative methodology.
  3. Critically reflect on the Australian Psychological Society Code of Conduct and Ethical Guidelines.
  4. Link research rigour to ontological, epistemological, theoretical and methodological frameworks.
  5. Consider the appropriateness of various experimental and quasi-experimental designs and interpreting research using parametric and non-parametric statistics.

Unit Content

  1. Components of qualitative research proposals and methodologies.
  2. Ethical issues in proposing and conducting research.
  3. Ontological, epistemological, theoretical, and methodological frameworks underlying qualitative methodologies.
  4. Advanced and complex experimental designs (e.g., factorial, correlational, multivariate designs) and their appropriate parametric and nonparametric methods of analysis.
