Description

This unit builds on previous knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods typically used in psychology research. It emphasises ethical conduct in psychology research, particularly in relation to the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics and Ethical Guidelines. Understanding is consolidated through critical evaluation of published studies, and the development of psychology research proposals.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the major issues in conducting research in natural settings.
  2. Demonstrate competence in preparing a qualitative research proposal.
  3. Evaluate the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics and Ethical Guidelines.
  4. Link research rigour to ontological, epistemological, theoretical and methodological frameworks.
  5. Interpret data using methodologies specific to psychology.

Unit Content

  1. Examination of various methodological approaches to conducting research in a psychological context.
  2. Development of a qualitative research proposal.
  3. Ethical issues in research.
  4. Critical evaluation of published psychological studies.
  5. Advanced quantitative and qualitative analyses of data using appropriate statistical and nonstatistical computer programmes.
