Description

This unit provides an overview of two main areas relating to abnormal psychology: the causes of psychopathology and the treatment strategies that have been developed to assist clients with psychological problems. To this end, the unit focuses on both experimental and clinical findings to understand and treat psychopathology.

Students must pass 1 unit from PSY1101

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the characteristics and aetiology of common psychological disorders by integrating theoretical and empirical evidence.
  2. Explain ethical and professional issues related to culturally appropriate assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with psychological disorders.
  3. Evaluate some of the main psychological approaches for treating psychological disorders in people across the lifespan.
  4. Apply interpersonal and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively to plan and execute a group project

Unit Content

  1. The historical and empirical basis for the classification and diagnosis of psychopathologies.
  2. Characteristics and aetiology of psychological disorders including, but not limited to anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
  3. Life-span developmental disorders, including disorders of childhood and ageing.
  4. Clinical assessment and psychological approaches to the treatment of psychological disorders.
  5. Ethical and professional issues as they pertain to identification and treatment of psychopathologies, with reference to the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics.
  6. Types of psychopathology including, but not limited to anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
