Description

The aim of this unit is to train clinical psychology students in group leadership skills to enable them to implement a variety of psychological interventions in a group format. The unit also addresses the theoretical and research literature that guides group psychotherapy techniques.

Must have completed 1 of PSY5198, PSY5211

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the theoretical basis of group leadership strategies used in psychotherapy and psycho-educational groups.
  2. Critically discuss the research basis for the group leadership strategies covered in the unit.
  3. Demonstrate competence in group leadership skills relevant to the implementation of psychological interventions in group formats.

  1. Clinical psychology and group therapy.
  2. Ethical issues in delivering psychotherapy in a group medium.
  3. Group leadership skills.
  4. Psychological approaches to group therapy.
  5. Therapeutic factors in groups.
  6. Theroetical perspectives and the evidence-base for group psychotherapy.
