Description

This unit focuses on developing knowledge and skills for ethical and legal practice in psychology. It covers current ethical and professional codes of practice and core legislation relevant to the professional practice of psychology in Australia. It also introduces core professional issues such as professional record keeping, professional communication, practice management, working under supervision, working with other professionals, and working with diverse clients.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply understanding of ethical principles and relevant legislation to generate appropriate responses to issues in professional practice.
  2. Analyse ethical issues in professional psychological practice with diverse clients and in interprofessional contexts.
  3. Justify and communicate ethical reasoning and decisions in written and oral formats.
  4. Reflect on knowledge, attitudes and skills and formulate developmental goals related to professional practice with culturally diverse populations and in interprofessional contexts.

Unit Content

  1. APS Code of Ethics and other ethical and legislative requirements relevant to professional psychology practice.
  2. Ethical decision making models and applications.
  3. Working with cultural diversity, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  4. Ethical and professional practice in interprofessional teamwork.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
