Description

This unit focuses on advanced theory and skills related to psychological practice with young people in a range of professional contexts. It integrates developmental psychopathology and systems theories as a framework for conceptualising presenting issues in children. Skills training in multimodal and standardised assessment of intellectual, emotional, and behavioural functioning is provided. The unit also focuses on a range of evidence-based strategies for improving children’s functioning, as well as working with other professionals and stakeholders.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed PSY6501, PSY6502

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate and apply psychological theory and scientific literature for culturally responsive diagnosis, assessment, and interventions with children and adolescents.
  2. Analyse and integrate information from multiple sources for client-centred intervention planning, monitoring and evaluation.
  3. Integrate technical and interpersonal skills to perform standardised psychological assessments.
  4. Communicate psychological information in an ethical and professional manner to clients, families, and other professionals.

Unit Content

  1. Developmental psychopathology.
  2. Working within a systems and interprofessional context with children, adolescents and their families.
  3. Multimodal, functional, and standardised assessment of children’s intellectual, emotional, and behavioural functioning.
  4. Empirically supported therapeutic strategies for common presenting issues in children and adolescents.
  5. Working with diversity and cultural responsiveness in psychological practice with children, adolescents and families.
  6. Monitoring and evaluating therapeutic progress and change.

Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
