Description

In this unit, students will be introduced to histories of gender and sexual politics, and their influence on contemporary performance practice. Students will be encouraged to situate their emerging performance practice and politics within an intersectional framework. They will explore topics such as the sex wars of the 1970s and subsequent attempts to regulate sexual harm; successive waves of feminist discourse and practice; the rise of queer theory and wider social acceptance of queer and trans identities; the denouncement of gendered abuse in the performing arts; and, the presentation and re-presentation of Australian masculinities in performance. The complex interplay of colonisation and concepts of sex and gender will be explored through the study of influential Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, Black, Indigenous and performance makers of colour.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and communicate critiques of performance in relation to contemporary notions of sex and gender.
  2. Examine their emerging performance practice in an intersectional framework.
  3. Explain the complex interplay of sex, gender and performance issues through creative non-fiction.

Unit Content

  1. Histories of sexual politics and their intersections with contemporary performance practice.
  2. Feminist, queer and trans theories and identities in performance.
  3. Feminist, queer and trans approaches to organisation, collaboration and scenographics.
  4. The construction and critique of Australian masculinities in performance.
  5. Gendered dimensions of influential Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Black, Indigenous and performance makers of colour.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will attend a series of classes and engage in learning activities via the ECU Learning Management System.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
