Description

This unit provides an introduction to the Japanese language for beginners, with an emphasis on learning foundational intercultural communication skills in a business context. Classes are designed to help students build cooperative and respectful relationships when working and doing business with Japanese people. Students are also introduced to hiragana and katakana, which are components of the Japanese writing system.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Communicate as a business professional in basic Japanese in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
  2. Use numbers up to 100,000 in basic conversations about time and price in Japanese.
  3. Interpret basic Japanese business manners and customs.
  4. Read basic hiragana and katakana for business communications.
  5. Write basic hiragana and katakana for business communications.

Unit Content

  1. Japanese sounds and pronunciation.
  2. Basic Japanese sentence structures.
  3. Fundamental vocabulary, grammar, and expression for simple business situations.
  4. Basic Japanese business manners, customs and protocols.
  5. Hiragana and katakana.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will be required to actively participate in group and individual learning activities in class. Activities are designed to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading comprehension and writing. Contemporary media will be used as a learning tool to enhance cultural understanding and student engagement.
