Description

This unit builds on Business Japanese 1 with an emphasis on developing respectful intercultural communication in a business context. Classes are designed to build confidence in the use of the Japanese language as students prepare to work and do business cooperatively with Japanese people. Students are also introduced to kanji, which is a component of the Japanese writing system.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed SBL1801

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Communicate in simple, descriptive Japanese in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner, as an educated business professional.
  2. Examine the ways Japanese culture influences business practice in an intercultural context.
  3. Read basic business communications using hiragana, katakana and basic kanji.
  4. Write basic business communications using hiragana, katakana and basic kanji.

Unit Content

  1. Simple Japanese sentence structures.
  2. Vocabulary, grammar, and common expressions for everyday business situations.
  3. Japanese workplace culture.
  4. Japanese business customs and protocols.
  5. Reading and writing kanji (up to 50 simple and 30 compound).

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will be required to actively participate in group and individual learning activities in class. Activities are designed to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading comprehension and writing. Contemporary media will be used as a learning tool to enhance cultural understanding and student engagement.
