Description

This unit discusses contemporary aviation operations and practices. An examination of how the current situation has been influenced by aviation history is included, along with a consideration of future developments in the field. The evolution of aviation, recent aviation organisations, and planning and operating procedures are explored, including an examination of airport and air traffic control operations. The unit will also explore airline public relations and marketing, as well as consider the fragility of the aviation industry and the ongoing effects of industry deregulation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the history of aviation and the resulting current aviation organisation.
  2. Explain a broad range of effective airline operational considerations.
  3. Effectively present relevant aviation information orally and graphically.
  4. Discuss general issues related to global sustainability of the airline industry.
  5. Describe current political and economic considerations impacting the global aviation industry.

Unit Content

  1. Evolution of the aviation industry, current aviation organisations.
  2. Airline scheduling, planning and operating procedures.
  3. Airports, air traffic control (ATC).
  4. Aircraft/engine (propulsion) manufacturers and their role in the aviation industry.
  5. Airline public relations, marketing, industry deregulation.
  6. Significant macro and micro variables, fragility of the airline industry.
