Description

This unit will provide opportunities for students to develop their personal scientific literacy as a foundation for teaching science in primary schools. In this unit, students will reflect on their conceptual understandings, develop science inquiry skills, and be introduced to the pedagogies associated with effective teaching of science in primary school contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop personal scientific literacy including science understandings, literacies of science, and science inquiry skills appropriate for beginning primary school teachers.
  2. Demonstrate understandings of science concepts relevant for teaching in primary school contexts.
  3. Outline the principles of contemporary learning theories applied to science teaching in primary school contexts.
  4. Use contemporary curriculum documents to plan small-group and short-term science learning experiences.

  2. Science inquiry skills used in fair test investigations and other inquiry activities.
  3. Contemporary curriculum documents related to teaching science in primary school contexts.
  4. Principles of learning theories applied to science in primary school contexts.
  5. Planning for small-group and short-term science learning experiences in primary schools.
  6. Oral and written literacies of science appropriate for beginning teachers.
