Description

This unit will provide opportunities to examine the purpose and nature of science teaching and learning within primary school contexts. In this unit, students will learn about scientific literacy as the goal of science education, the pedagogies associated with effective teaching, and the processes related to science inquiry.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed PPA2360 and SCE1260

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded SCE2010, SCE2100, SCE3260.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop personal scientific literacy including science understandings and inquiry skills relevant to the primary school context.
  2. Describe the rationale, aims, scope and sequence of contemporary science curriculum documents.
  3. Describe the purposes, values and applications of science inquiry in a primary school setting.
  4. Structure, sequence, and assess medium and long-term science learning experiences across the primary school context that are reflective of the social constructivist view of learning.
  5. Develop and evaluate teaching resources relevant for science in the primary school context.

  1. Personal scientific literacy and understanding of science concepts.
  2. Scientific literacy for active citizenship as the goal of science education in primary school context.
  3. Science inquiry processes relevant to primary school contexts.
  4. Teaching and learning theory and strategies appropriate for planning, delivering and assessing primary science.
  5. Rationale, aim, scope and sequence of contemporary curriculum documents relevant for teaching science in primary school contexts.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
