Description

This unit provides pre-service teachers with the opportunity to engage in a project focused on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning areas within a primary education context. The nature of the project will be determined by negotiation between the pre-service teacher, unit coordinator and other relevant parties including schools, science outreach organisations and relevant industries.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Examine critically the key issues related to the current state of STEM education within the primary school context.
  2. Identify a conceptually and/or professionally significant project topic within the field of STEM education.
  3. Engage with schools and other education providers to plan, develop and/or deliver STEM learning experiences appropriate for the primary school context.
  4. Prepare and present a report on the project, reflect on peer feedback, and consider implications for future practice.

Unit Content

  1. Current state of STEM education with focus on the Western Australian context.
  2. Identification of project topics within field of STEM education.
  3. Develop a project proposal.
  4. Undertake and report on a STEM education project.
  5. Work collaboratively to develop STEM learning experiences.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit will comprise seminars, structured independent and collaborative learning tasks, and associated reflective activities.
