Description

This unit addresses legal issues and ethical choices facing ambulance officers working in todays pre-hospital environment. In addition it introduces the student to ambulance administration and policy in preparation for their role as a professional paramedic.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Consider the ethical issues that apply to paramedics.
  2. Describe the medico-legal issues relevant to the paramedic working in the pre- hospital environment.
  3. Describe the medico-legal issues that pertain to the use of restraint and force by the paramedic.
  4. Describe various ethical and legal principles and processes within the health care system.
  5. Design a code of ethics for pre hospital professionals.
  6. Discuss how ethical and legal practices and issues may influence paramedic practice.
  7. Locate and comment on statutes relevant to paramedic science.

  2. Emergency driving.
  3. Evidence, records and signatures.
  4. Justice, consent and negligence.
  5. Law & Ethical principles in the pre hospital environment.
