Description

This unit will introduce students to advanced forensic techniques, analysis of crime scene markings and identification of biological samples. The unit will also include description of the latest theoretical knowledge underpinning forensic DNA methodologies and the technology employed in preparation and analysis.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass SCH2143 Forensic Skills

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Examine crime scenes and evidence in accordance with strict evidence handling procedures.
  2. Apply advanced forensic techniques to the analysis of crime scenes and evidence.
  3. Communicate the results of forensic analysis to a range of stakeholders.
  4. Apply the laws of evidence handling to ensure evidence admissibility in court.

Unit Content

  1. Forensic DNA data presentation and submission.
  2. Advanced fingerprinting.
  3. Sample collection and storage.
  4. Techniques in forensic chemistry and microbiology.
  5. Hair and fibre analysis.
  6. Human biological sample identification.
  7. Ballistics and trajectory determination.
  8. Introduction to blood spatter analysis.
  9. Forensic handwriting and document analysis.
