Description

In this unit, students will be introduced to the vegetative methods used for plant propagation of horticultural crops, including pseudobulbs, bulbs, offsets, runners, cuttings, layering and budding/grafting. The role of rootstock, scion, and graft incompatibility will also be discussed. Micropropagation methods and their advantages and disadvantages in propagating horticultural plants will be covered as will the role of management of mineral nutrition, irrigation, diseases, pests, and growth of nursery plants.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Determine methods to improve the success rate of plant propagation.
  2. Communicate principles and practices of propagation following appropriate structure.
  3. Interact with stakeholders in production and sales within the horticultural industry.
  4. Use a range of methods to propagate horticultural crops.
  5. Apply basic principles to propagate plants successfully.

  1. Sexual and asexual methods of plant propagation.
  2. Growing media.
  3. Vegetative propagation of perennial and annual crops.
  4. Graft incompatibility between rootstock and scion.
  5. Use of growth regulators in plant propagation.
  6. Micropropagation and management of nursery plants.

Plagiarism

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
