This unit is undertaken by students who have been successful in securing a work experience placement in the Science and Mathematics discipline. In this unit the student is supervised by a School of Science staff member who is allocated as their placement supervisor in addition to a workplace supervisor who is an experienced staff member of the organisation hosting the work experience student. Students undertaking a work placement will demonstrate knowledge relevant to the Science and Mathematics discipline as well as problem solving, communication and collaboration, research, and ethical conduct skills.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.
This is a work experience unit in which the placement is equivalent to a minimum of 340 hours (over 10+ weeks) of industry placement. ECU placement supervisors ensure that an agreed plan of work is executed and industry supervision is carried out by a workplace supervisor. This is a Work Integrated Learning unit designed to create an authentic learning experience in an industry setting where students can demonstrate knowledge associated with a course within the Science and Mathematics discipline as well as career skills acquired throughout their degree. As such, this unit is not considered as part of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) requests. Students, under the supervision of a nominated placement and workplace supervisor, will take responsibility for their own learning and professional outcomes through regular feedback with the workplace and placement supervisor and through independent study, practice and research. The underpinning learning process is that of independent learning in which aspects of the work experience are reflected upon with a view to altering future behaviour, including academic, research and professional capabilities.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
