Description

Strategic leadership is the ability to lead an organisation. A strategic leader is able to define and develop the purpose of the organisation, the key strategies, the optimum structure, the right people in the right roles, and the most effective processes for the organisation to succeed. This unit focuses on enhancing self-development of the participant, and explores the use of a variety of tools and interventions to enable clinical leaders to advance the necessary skills to set and maintain high standards of healthcare, to lead by example and to inspire, motivate and empower their teams.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply strategic thinking in the health care sector.
  2. Develop self awareness , emotional intelligence and apply a variety of leadership theories to change processes.
  3. Evaluate complex team situations and resources within the organisation to manage same.
  4. Evaluate service improvement, quality & risk.
  5. Evidence the implications of workforce issues
  6. Implement national and state health care reform.
  7. Initiate and direct the building of strategic partnerships & networks.
  8. Lead large organisational teams acknowledging diversity.

Additional Learning Experience Information

All unit materials will be delivered through the attendance at an intensive teaching week at the beginning of semester. Materials are to be presented in the form of lectures, workshops and interactive activities and discussions. An e-learning package will be made available to all students after this intensive week for the remainder of the semester.
