Description

In this unit students complete a research or development project. Students get the opportunity to apply the techniques they have learnt in previous units in a research environment.

Prerequisite Rule

(Students must pass 30 credit points at levels 2 from units owned by D501 OR (Students must pass 30 credit points at levels 3 from units owned by D501 AND Permission required))

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate the results of the project in both written and oral forms.
  2. Execute an independent research or development project.
  3. Maintain an accurate record of an experimental procedure through the maintenance of a laboratory notebook record.
  4. Plan and execute an experimental procedure.

Unit Content

  1. Students are required to conduct a research or development project on an individual basis. In some cases these will be industrially related projects. A laboratory notebook record of the research project is maintained. On completion of the project, students present a seminar on the project, and submit a detailed project report on the research topic.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
