Description

This unit traces the evolution of the documentary form through different modes of expression as new technologies and perspectives have enabled the re-imagining of the representation of the real. The work of key filmmakers and innovators is interrogated with a view to equipping students to think innovatively and creatively in this field.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe key historical movements in documentary and evaluate their contribution to the development of the form.
  2. Explain the significance of major technological developments in the development of the form.
  3. Research and communicate the potential of emerging technologies for documentary storytelling.

Unit Content

  1. Historical evolution of documentary styles.
  2. Hybrid fact-fiction forms
  3. Documentary and immersive screen technologies.
  4. Human perception and the screen experience.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit will be delivered using technology enhanced learning, a learner-centered approach. Central to technology-enhanced learning is completing self-directed online activities outside of class contact time. Students are required to complete set readings and viewings before class. These preparatory activities introduce students to initial, relatable conceptions of the topics, which are reinforced through lectures and tutorials.
