Description

This unit involves the pre-production, production and post-production of a web-series, a serialised dramatic format that differs from the short film and documentary form, and entails an understanding of episodic story telling styles, devices and structure. Students will research and analyse web-series narrative structures and apply this to an 8-episode format. Students will take on two of the following roles: producer, writer, director, editor, cinematographer, sound recordist or production designer. They will be required to practice team work and collaboration on the production and post-production of the series. They will apply and analyse the knowledge and experience gained in other production units to their role as members of the production team. Masters students will be required to maintain a journal of their production experience, as a means of evaluating their performance and analyzing mechanism and strategies for dealing with issues and problems arising during the production stage. At the conclusion of the project, students will critically reflect on their experience in a written report, evaluate their own performance and the performance of their peers, and propose alternative strategies or processes for improvement. Masters students will also provide a critical evaluation of the completed web-series and propose ways that the finished production could be improved.

Students will formally document their experiences in developing the web-series, outlining the mechanisms and strategies for dealing with issues that arise during the production, as well as reflecting on their own performance and the performance of their peers. This process will allow for recognising alternative strategies, processes of improvement, and a critical evaluation of the produced series.
