Description

This unit involves the pre-production, production and post-production of a web-series – a serialised dramatic format that differs from the short film and documentary form – and entails an understanding of episodic story telling styles, devices and structure. Students will research and analyse narrative an episodic structures of web series, taking on two of the following roles: producer, writer, director, editor, cinematographer, sound recordist or production designer. In doing so, students will work collaboratively in a production team to produce the series from beginning to end. Students will formally document their experiences in developing the web-series, outlining the mechanisms and strategies for dealing with issues that arise during the production, as well as reflecting on their own performance and the performance of their peers. This process will allow for recognising alternative strategies, processes of improvement, and a critical evaluation of the produced series.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the web-series format and apply appropriate formats, structures, schedules and production parameters in the creation of an episodic drama.
  2. Explain the roles and responsibilities of key crew roles, and perform two of these roles in the creation of a web-series.
  3. Apply and practice the discipline, commitment and interpersonal skills necessary to work as a member of a production team.
  4. Generate and maintain a journal and the documentation required for the production.
  5. Develop mechanisms for critical self-evaluation and evaluation of their peers in the contribution to the completed work.

  1. Methodology and critical analysis of the web-series format, structures and production parameters.
  2. Collaboration as part of a production team.
  3. Production and performance responsibilities of producer, writer, director, editor, cinematographer, sound recordist or production designer.
  4. Strategies for critical peer and self-reflection and assessment.
  5. Characteristics of production journals and industry-specific document management.
  6. Report production that reflects on the process and evaluates contribution to the production.
