Description

Building Management Systems will examine the concept of facility management within the built environment, with an emphasis placed on the interaction between facility and security. Major factors that affects our living, working and play within facilities are considered, such as fire and life safety, codes and standards, utilities and sustainability.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Define and explain the concept of built environment, facility management and security.
  2. Define and explain the concept of the built environment, facility management and security.
  3. Explain and analyse the principles and applications of major building plant and equipment;
  4. Examine the criticality of life safety plant and equipment systems;
  5. Understand the concepts, principles and application of sustainability;
  6. Demonstrate and interpret an understanding of the relationship between building plant and equipment and security;
  7. Apply problem solving techniques in establishing management strategies within facilities.

Unit Content

  1. Fire life and safety protection
  2. Heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems
  3. Lifts and escalators: operation, safety and efficiency, programmed access.
  4. Audio systems: types, application, maintenance, fire and security management
  5. Sustainability: energy management, control, monitoring and back-up sources.
  6. Lighting: lights and control
  7. Building Code of Australia and other relevant national codes and standards.
