Description

This unit contains a selection of topics from current issues in medical sciences and human disease. Students will explore the very latest in contemporary research delivered by world-leading experts in their fields. State of the art technologies and new research methodologies driving current clinical practice are also covered in the unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the use of stem cells as a therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative and other human diseases.
  2. Evaluate current research literature in medical science.
  3. Explain the molecular and physiological basis of several human diseases.
  4. Explain various methods used in the context of medical science.
  5. Locate their own research topic within the broader field of medical science.
  6. Specify the latest technologies utilised in cancer research.

  1. Animal experimentation.
  2. Biotechnology and bioinformatics.
  3. Cancer.
  4. Clinical genetics.
  5. Human diseases in local andglobal contexts.
  6. Human molecular biology.
  7. Methodological procedures.
  8. Neurosciences.
  9. Stem cells.
  10. Transplantation.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit will be taught by guest lecturers and current researchers locally, nationally and internationally wherever possible. Lectures will be interactive in delivery and students will participate in group discussions around various topics. Students will also be given the opportunity to attend conferences and seminars and participate in online forums and webinars as they arise.
