Description

In this unit, students will gain valuable clinical experience in a community or hospital facility. Students will attend a health or educational facility throughout the semester to observe and carry out clinical work involving assessment, intervention planning and implementation with clients, their families, and relevant professionals under supervision. Teamwork will be an integral part of the practicum. Clinical placements may have a focus on either adult or paediatric communication and/or swallowing disorders. Students will work with clients from a range of cultural backgrounds. Students will further evaluate their own skills against the units of competency and develop reflective practice. In this unit, students will work with the opposite caseload to pre-requisite unit SPE3107 (i.e. adults or children).

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Off-campus: supervised clinical practicum. On-campus: practicum preparation, simulation and clinical tutorials, including some preparation in weeks outside of the normal semester.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  2. Apply clinical reasoning to interpret communication disorders in unseen patients.
  3. Present evidence to demonstrate clinical performance.
  4. Build personal and professional career development capabilities through self-reflection, planning and goal setting activities.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students must complete a supervised clinical practicum that is 10-12 days long, in an appointed work environment within a public, private or non-profit organisation. Students participate in group discussion, case studies and learning activities to consolidate learning. The placement will be supplemented with regular clinical tutorials to assist in student preparation for the placement and to provide a venue for discussion of clinical reasoning skills and professional practice, including verbal and written communication with clients and other professionals. Students complete simulation experiences to develop clinical skills.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
