Description

This unit involves block placement/s in a variety of speech pathology practices located in urban and rural settings. Students will participate in all aspects of clinical service delivery involving clients with acquired, developmental and degenerative communication or swallowing disorders from a range of cultural backgrounds. Students will be expected to demonstrate the skill, knowledge base, and attitudes heading towards entry-level practice of speech pathology as specified by Speech Pathology Australia in their Competency-Based Occupational Standards (2011) document.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 4 units from SPE3105, SPE3106, SPE3108, SPE3111

Co-Requisite Rule

Must be enrolled in course version K71, Y02, Y12

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate intermediate to entry-level skills required in clinical speech pathology service delivery as specified by the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (Speech Pathology Australia, 2011) document.
  2. Design and conduct appropriate assessments including all aspects of the WHO ICF framework, but emphasising the biopsychosocial aspect.
  3. Formulate treatment plans, implement supervised treatment of clients, and complete required clinical administrative tasks, based on the assessment report.
  4. Generate assessment reports according to requirements of individual clinics.

Unit Content

  1. Assessment and treatment across the range indicators specified in the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (Speech Pathology Australia, 2011) document, including communication skills consistent with Entry Level.
  2. Clinical service delivery pertaining to a variety of clinical settings with clients with a range of cultural backgrounds.
  3. Preparation and management of contracts associated with supervision.
  4. Professional administrative duties relating to clinical settings.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
