Description

Students will complete a block clinical placement in a speech pathology practice located in an urban or rural setting. Students will participate in all aspects of clinical service delivery involving clients who present with a range of communication or swallowing disorders and come from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The clinical placement will have a focus on either an adult or paediatric caseload. Students will be expected to demonstrate the skills, knowledge base, and attitudes required for progression to entry-level practice of speech pathology as specified by Speech Pathology Australia in the Competency-Based Occupational Standards document.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Off-campus supervised clinical practicum of 8-10 week duration (4-5 days a week) between February and December. On-campus practicum preparation and clinical tutorials between January and December.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed SPE3105, SPE3106, SPE3108, SPE3125 and SPE3111 or SPE3128

Co-Requisite Rule

Students must be enrolled in Y02 or Y12

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate close to entry-level skills required in clinical speech pathology service delivery as specified by the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (Speech Pathology Australia) document.
  2. Demonstrate and present clinical reasoning in the assessment of a client.
  3. Demonstrate and present the full range of practice evidence to demonstrate clinical performance.
  4. Build personal and professional career development capabilities through self-reflection, planning and goal setting activities.

  3. Treatment of communication and swallowing disorders.
  4. Speech pathology range of practice areas.
  5. Clinical reasoning.
  6. Goal setting.
  7. Reflective Practice.
  8. Professional writing of assessment plans, treatment plans and reports.
  9. Cultural and linguistic diversity.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students must complete a clinical practicum that is equivalent to around 40 days in an appointed work environment within a public, private or non-profit organisation. The placement will be supplemented with regular clinical tutorials where students participate in group discussion, case studies and learning activities to consolidate learning. Students will be assessed on their ability to present a case and will develop a comprehensive ePortfolio to document their clinical competencies.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
