Description

This unit comprises block placement/s across a variety of public and private speech pathology clinics located in urban and rural communities. Students will contribute to aspects of the required clinical service to clients with various speech pathologies, from a range of cultural backgrounds. To this end, they will be expected to demonstrate skills equivalent to the entry-level practice of speech pathology as specified by Speech Pathology Australia in their Competency-Based Occupational Standards (2011) document and to reflect on similarities and differences of clinical speech pathology resources and case management strategies for clients in urban and rural communities.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from SPE4110

Co-Requisite Rule

Must be enrolled in course version K71, Y02, Y12

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate entry-level skills required in clinical speech pathology service delivery as specified by the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (Speech Pathology Australia, 2011) document in public and private settings.
  2. Design and conduct appropriate assessments including all aspects of the WHO ICF framework.
  3. Formulate treatment plans, implement supervised treatment of clients, and complete required administrative tasks in individual clinics.
  4. Generate assessment reports according to requirements of individual clinics.

Unit Content

  1. Assessment and treatment in speech pathology clinics across the range indicators specified by Speech Pathology Australia (2011) in their Competency-Based Occupational Standards document.
  2. Clinical service delivery pertaining to a variety of clinical settings, with clients from a range of cultural backgrounds.
  3. Preparation and management of contracts associated with supervision.
  4. Professional administrative duties relating to speech pathology clinics.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
