Description

Among the central features of the Master of Teaching course is the interplay between educational research, policy and practice, and the need for teachers to critically reflect on their practices and transform them as a consequence of this analysis. The central focus of this unit of study is on the design, implementation, and reporting of School-based Professional Learning (SPL). The SPL articulates the development of educational practice whilst on internship at a school. In addition to using researching in context, students are expected to demonstrate current knowledge and proficiency in using appropriate ICT tools to engage and support student learning.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Conduct an analysis of a specific educational environment to further understand the nature of schools as workplaces and their associated values, routines and cultures.
2. Explore and analyse educational research, ideas and issues, and discuss and summarise findings in terms of impact on own teaching and learning
   practices.
3. Prepare for and contribute to discussions about the teaching profession or subject/content.
4. Use verbal, visual and other media to report on the nature, conduct, results and analysis
   of their teaching program using the style and protocols appropriate for academic writing.
5. Satisfactorily complete an intensive period of in-school experience that inducts them into the nature, structure and organisation of schools and the work, roles and responsibilities of teachers.
6. Accept responsibility in an independent teaching position
   and professionally communicate and interact with staff, students and the broader school
   community.
   
7. Plan, implement, assess and evaluate contemporary units of work and lessons in their learning area
   that are well grounded in educational research, state and system policy frameworks and
   designed to maximise student engagement and learning.
8. Assess and report on students learning fairly and equitably.
9. Demonstrate the practical consolidation of the Graduate Teacher level of the Australian
   Professional Standards for Teachers.
   

Unit Content

1. Design and development of an appropriate School based Professional Learning (SPL) experience lesson plans and programs.
2. Implementation of a SPL teaching and delivery.
3. The SPL and further professional development.
4. The implications of the SPL for student learning and participation.
5. Critical discussion of the SPL.
6. Since the unit occurs in a workplace setting there are no formal presentations of the unit content topics.
   This unit will involve a series of meetings held before, during and after the internship on campus. Attendance and participation at all meetings is compulsory for all MTeach students completing the internship.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Presentations may be complemented with some directed reading. Local, state, national and international conferences and seminars, as well as other professional learning activities through education systems, professional organisations and associations, can be used to demonstrate learning in this unit. Structured discussion and critique of teaching and presentations in the seminars will scaffold students' development of a sophisticated reflection on their teaching practice. Professional Learning booklet should be completed on a daily/weekly basis to support professional dialogue and learning. Regular meetings held to assist in the processes required.
