This unit involves a study of the major styles and theories of leadership with an emphasis on diagnosing the leadership potential of individuals and suggesting ways to increase leader effectiveness in sport and recreation settings. It will use practical activities to demonstrate leadership in group dynamics, the importance of communications and introduce concepts such as leadership attributes for the organisational change process. It also examines recreation programming concepts, the process of programme planning, design, budgeting, promotion and evaluation. Students are also provided with the opportunity of gaining experiential knowledge of recreation programming during a short-term industry practical placement and the development of career and employee resources.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:
The mode of delivery for this unit is through weekly three hour on-campus seminars, practical sessions, guest speakers and a short-term industry practical placement in a programming setting. The teaching and learning approach in this unit is enhanced through practical leadership activity facilitations by students. Group facilitation and the generation of ideas and skills are developed via individual presentations of leadership activities where communication skills, team work and problem solving abilities are emphasised. This unit also provides a work integrated learning component whereby students are required to undertake a short term practicum placement within a sport or recreation program for an industry agency or organisation. Employability skills are developed with the submission of assessment items including an individual resume based on the practicum placement. The succesful completion of this unit requires students to complete assessment items which are assessed for quality academic and professional standard, including written communication, verbal communication, critical analysis and the ability to research effectively.
