The unit gives an overview of perspectives in Screen Studies. Taking an historical approach, it looks at aesthetic movements in film/cinema and at theoretical approaches developed for the study of film.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the cultural, technical and economic development of cinema.
  2. Critically assess film movements including Expressionism, Surrealism, Neorealism and French New Wave.
  3. Discuss critical approaches developed within Film Studies.
  4. Explain the different aesthetic possibilities developed in film and the cinema.

Unit Content

  1. An overview of the history of film and cinema.
  2. Exploration and analysis of key cinematic movements.
  3. Explanation and examination of major theoretical approaches developed in Film Study.
  4. Analysis of the aesthetic possibilities of film.

This unit will be delivered using technology enhanced learning, a learner-centered approach. Central to technology-enhanced learning is completing self-directed online activities outside of class contact time. Students are required to complete set readings and viewings before class. These preparatory activities introduce students to initial, relatable conceptions of the topics, which are reinforced through lectures and tutorials.
