Description

This unit takes the contemporary perspective of filmosophy as the means in which to theoretically interpret and critically evaluate cult cinema, utopian animations, visionary documentaries and radical music videos. It will provide creative inspiration for practitioners and scholars alike, using film to address some of the ongoing philosophical questions of life. The final assignment challenges students to synthesise filmosophy into action by way of a creative production.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass SPO1050 before enrolling in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Examine the relationship between cinema and philosophy by producing a video essay.
  2. Critically discuss selected philosophies and concepts.
  3. Produce a creative output that embodies a chosen philosophy.
  4. Appraise the quality and rigour of research sources.

Unit Content

  1. Study of film as philosophy.
  2. Studies of key philosophical texts.
  3. Filmosophic analysis of screen texts in various genres.
  4. Applying filmosophy to aesthetic practice.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit will be delivered using technology enhanced learning, a learner-centered approach. Central to technology-enhanced learning is completing self-directed online activities outside of class contact time. Students are required to complete set readings and viewings before class. These preparatory activities introduce students to initial, relatable conceptions of the topics, which are reinforced through lectures and tutorials.
